Tablescape Thursday - Blue Skies

Sunny Skies Up!
Despite any mention of April Showers, these days I find myself singing that old Irving Berlin song ‘Blue Skies’… “Blue skies smiling at me” - such a beautiful idea – to know that the sky smiles down on us. Whether outdoors or in, I love to recreate the beauty of a blue sky on my table. Layered here, on this quaint little table for two, is the Shannon Plaid breakfast cloth. Its powdery blues and soft yellow weave give it a wonderful country flavor and provides the perfect base for the Josephine Blue placemats. Named after my beautiful, vibrant granddaughter, the Josephine brings a gentle floral aspect to this scape while hints of sunny yellow add a cheerful note. The coordinating napkins are double-layered over Essential Napkins in pale yellow to bring forth even more sunshine! Napkin cuffs add a dash of sophistication while fresh floral arrangements herald the coming of our beloved garden season! With a table so fresh and welcoming, why not linger in comfort as well as style? Here the chairs are lined with comfy pillows in the Shannon Patchwork collection – a symphony of blue floral prints and plaids – once you sit down, you’ll never want to get up!

Here’s to beautiful spring blue skies and warm sunshine – when you smile up at them, rest assured they’re smiling back.

The Fruits of a New Season, Peach Ginger Crisp

Warm breezes are hinting at the bright sunshine to come. As we plant the seeds of spring and look forward to tomorrow’s summer gardens, what better way to enjoy the promise of the warm season than with a fabulous summer dessert? Here’s a favorite – Peach Ginger Crisp! Using fresh ingredients makes this recipe simply irresistible – sweet and juicy peaches marry beautifully with the pungent flavor of grated ginger (the heady aromas you’ll enjoy while preparing this dessert are testimony enough!) and the hardy crunch of sliced almonds, oats and brown sugar will have everyone coming back for more. Since this dish is inspired by the anticipation of fresh fruits from a summer orchard, it’s featured on our delicious Chelsea tablecloth in pale yellow with lots of coordinating Essential napkins for those lip-smacking moments!

Fiesta Tablescape for La Cache

Spring is beginning to awaken the Montreal landscape – daffodil and crocus buds are ready to bloom and crisp green tulip stalks push through the thawing earth. With this happy hint of seasonal color in mind, we decided to amp up the brilliant tones of the spring table at our La Cache store in Westmount.

I love layering cloths so our pretty round table is set with a base of the Papillon Jaquard Breakfast cloth. Over top is the joyous Fiesta Plaid (also a breakfast cloth) – the rich turquoise blue, magenta and yellow weave really catches the eye! Quilted placemats in the Paisley Bouquet Pink collection pick up the rosy hues in this tablescape while the scalloped edges add further texture. The dusty rose dishware is vintage-inspired and newly available in our boutique, as is the blue glassware – not a combination you would immediately think to pair but the tablecloth really pulls it all together beautifully.

Of course my love of birds is revealed in the Hummingbird watering can and dove tea cups and don’t you think the whimsical turquoise beaded lamp adds just the right mood lighting? Time to sit back and enjoy summer lemonade in anticipation of the season!

Thanks for stopping by!

It's official - Saturday is the first day of spring! This is a wonderful time to freshen the home, and with Easter and Passover quickly approaching a new table setting could be the perfect way to officially welcome the changing of the seasons.

To get started, a few of my favorite things to do are:

  • Begin with a color scheme or pattern
  • Definitely mix & match
  • Contrast shapes and details
  • Have fun and trust your instincts!

For a more in depth steps read my newly posted article on my website: Decorating your Spring Table

Collecting Colorful Tablecloths

Are you like me? In love with textiles, in love with cotton, in love with flowers and all of their colors, in love with embroidery and all of its stitches, in love with jacquards and plaids and totally besotted when all this beauty comes together in a tablecloth? I think you are like me. I love to collect textiles. Tablecloths and napkins offer the prettiest and least expensive way to enjoy my most innocent of addictions.

My treasure cupboards and linen closets are simply spilling in the most pretty of ways with cloths yesterday and yesteryear. They remind me of Christmas dinners, and Easter lunches, meals with friends and birthday parties, intimate tête à têtes, and boisterous family gatherings. Older softly faded cloths remind me of picnics washed in sunlight, of lazy afternoons and sleeping children.

Tell me your memories of one of my tablecloths, or describe your own linen collection – even send a photo (aprilcornell@aprilcornellholdings.com) - and we will randomly select a winner to receive a free tablecloth!

Tea Towel Giveaway!

Take a few minutes and share a favorite stew or soup that brings comfort on a chilly day (just the kind of stew/soup is okay - or if you're feeling ambitious let us know the recipe!). We'll choose the winner of an April Cornell Tea Towel - "The House" - from the visitors who leave a comment to this post. On Friday, we'll use a random number generator and announce the winner of a tea towel. Be sure to check back and see if you won!

A delicious seasonal stew. Friends it is time to put your apron and cook! My father loved stew, and my mother liked to make it for him. I too love stew, and find it such a comfort dish for the change of seasons. As the stew simmers and its savory smell fills the air, I set my table with a rich autumn colored tablecloth, tall candles, and deep plates. The candle light casts a spell of homey beauty, a table fit for conversation, good food and friendship.

Here's my recipe for Dad's stew, modified.
The secret - the deliciousness of this stew, is the lamb. It gives the rich meat flavor, evoking the umm, umm, yumm, spoon scraping experience.

  • 1 lb of beef stewing meat
  • 1 lb of lamb cut up (stew meat if available, otherwise I cut up lamb chops)
  • 1 large onion
  • Butter to fry the onion (about a quarter cup)
  • 3 medium potatoes
  • 6 small carrots (if they are quite fresh I don't peel them)
  • 1 medium turnip
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper
Serve with: Crusty Bread, Red Wine or Apple Cider

1. In a low dish put flour, salt and pepper, then roll the cubed meat in it (if you run out of flour, add more).
2. In a large frying pan, cut your large onion and fry in butter, on low heat.
3. Add meat to pan, turning so that all parts become sealed. I add more butter if it is too dry. You don't want the meat to stick to the pan; the butter and flour on the meat are creating a nice gravy. Put aside when meat is done (you can put the meat in a large pot to wait for the veggies, as it gets ready).
4. Vegetables - I like to parboil my potatoes - I have a real aversion to hard potatoes. I cut my potatoes rather small (not in cubes - a quarter potato or less depending on the size) this is mostly my own prejudice as I don't like the potatoes to dominate the stew - I like the meat, carrots and turnip to be the main experience. I parboil the carrots and turnip as well, together in the same pot as the potatoes. The turnip should be peeled and cut into smallish pieces, a little smaller than the potato. I let them cook for about 5-7 minutes, before adding to the stew.
5. In the big pot, I add the stew meat and all the vegetables.
6. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of water, not too much - this is not a watery stew, it is thick and rich and meaty. Use the water that you boiled the vegetables in, it is more flavorful.
7. Put the lid on the pot and let the stew simmer for a few hours, stirring occasionally. Add a little water if it is too dry, or flour if it is too watery (keep some of the boiled vegetable water in a measuring cup that you can mix your flour in that before adding to the stew).
8. When the delicious smells begin to waft, slice your loaf of crusty bread, decant your red wine or pour a glass of apple cider to accompany the meal.

Remember:
Some like it hot, Some like it cold, Some like it in the pot Nine days old!

Behind the Scenes

This week is all hands on deck at our office in Burlington, VT. We set up a photo studio in our warehouse, painted cinder block walls, draped backgrounds, collected props and created mini environments of beauty to showcase new table linens, scarves and clothing for our website.
Many eyes, and hands were involved - there was the designer's eye [this is my vision], the graphic artist's eye [this is what I see on the screen], the buyer's eye [can the customer understand the product?], the perfectionist's eye [there's a wrinkle in the napkin], and the photographer's eye [this is what the camera sees!]
So many details, so much focus and such excitement and laughter made a great creative day.
My favorite part was when I was being photographed sitting at a table, and four people were dancing to YMCA behind me to make me laugh - it worked!

Giving Thanks Twice

Hint: Click on the photos to see a beautiful full-screen view.
Thanksgiving is perfect day to gather around a table dressed in colorful tablecloths and napkins and groaning with season's bounty to give thanks for one another and for the food that has been prepared. Having been born in Montreal, and now living in Burlington, Vermont, I am happy to celebrate Thanksgiving in both places. Canadian Thanksgiving is October 11, and by the time American Thanksgiving comes around the end of November, I will be ready for the second batch of turkey and trimmings.
I enjoy dressing the table with layered tablecloths and toppers, and sometimes use two napkins at each place. It's nice to combine a solid napkin and a print that I either fold together or hold together with a beautiful napkin ring. Canadian Thanksgiving is this weekend, so its time to start thinking about dressing the table. I'm sharing two settings as inspiration for a colorful, warm and wonderful table. Tomorrow, I'll be sharing my recipe for traditional Apple Crumble, so be sure to stop back by!

Favorite Colors for Autumn Decor

I arrived back home in Burlington over the weekend from Delhi and was greeted by lovely fall weather. I settled in on Sunday and feathered my nest in some new prints. It's so easy to change the feel of the house for the seasons by switching out tablecloths for fresh autumn colors, and switching out cushions and pillows in chairs and sofas in a fall palette.
One of my favorite ways of changing the color tones for the seasons is to display a basket filled with nicely folded napkins that are mixed and matched in patterns and textures that mirror the feel of the season at hand. This year I am blending deep purples, pinks, taupe, and greens. What do you think? What are your favorite colors for fall this year?

Meet Harpreet - Be Inspired

One of the richest threads that weaves the April Cornell story together into the rich and unique brand and company it is today is the history and successful growth of our operations in New Delhi, India. Behind that story is the woman who has made it happen – Harpreet Sindhu. I have known Harpreet since the mid 1980s when she was with one of our vendors. She joined what was then Cornell Trading in New Delhi in 1990 when it was just three employees working out of our home in Delhi.

Today we are a completely vertical company, which means that we own, manage and control not only the design and retailing of our products but also the manufacturing. And Harpreet, through her compassionate hard work and nurturing leadership built this side of the business and empowers it to run. She is a multi-layered woman: a strong leader, loving wife and mother. Harpreet is an inspiration to me everyday. She never allows obstacles to block her, but rather concentrates on solutions. She also has a very caring heart and shares my beliefs about using the business to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate. The success of the business means we have more to give to The Giving World Foundation.

Women’s stories are important to me, and I believe that sharing them is central to what the April Cornell brand is about. Sharing, connecting, being supported by how others are inspired helps us challenge ourselves. Over the next few days I am going to spend some time telling you more about this amazing businesswoman and friend. And while Harpreet lives many, many miles from most of our North American customers, you will see how she balances many of the roles other women do. I know she will inspire you too!
